4 Tips to Make Your Galentine’s Day Magical

“All the ladies if you feel me, help me sing it out!” My car heater blew my hair back in full Yoncé fashion as I belted out this line as loud as my vocal cords would let me. I was late and couldn’t find parking in Downtown Los Angeles (as usual), but this Black girl anthem was exactly what I needed to set the tone for this mid-day Galentine’s Day photoshoot with my girls.

We filed into the cutest pink photo studio you’ve ever seen in your life and I don’t know if it was the rosé on a workday or the 6 queens in attendance, but when I tell you that there was tangible magic in the room, I’m not kidding. It was David Blaine level magic.

For the past year in quarantine, I’ve spent 95% of my time with my boyfriend. And don’t get me wrong, it’s been fantastic — I love that man so much, but after all this time in seclusion, I forgot how much sisterhood feeds my soul. There’s something about that girl-gang energy that just hits different. It’s so important to invest in your girlfriend relationships — support each other, challenge each other, listen to each other, and uplift each other. If you thought your #BlackGirlMagic was strong alone, imagine the power of that magic combined. We’re talking Hogwarts power.

So, for all my ladies reading this thinking about your girlfriends who you haven’t seen in ages, here’s your sign. Go get a rapid COVID test and get this magic show on the road. Here are 4 tips to make your Galentine’s Day get-together one for the books.

1.) Location is Everything

Find a location that is free from distractions. Leave the kids, leave the hubby and find a place where you can kiki as loud as you want with your girls. For our shoot, we booked an affordable location for a couple hours on peerspace.com. This is a great resource if you don’t have a private place to party.

2.) Theme It

I don’t care if you’re 5 or 50, theme parties will always be fun. Instruct your girls to wear a specific color, jammies or ball gowns for all I care, but pick a theme and send out that text! We wore white, pink or red for our shoot and I stopped at the drugstore for some flowers and chocolates! And if you’re thinking, “we don’t need flowers,” I assure you, it’s a vibe. Your girls will appreciate the attention to detail.

3.) Load up on goodies

If there are no snacks, it’s simply not a party in my humble opinion. Make sure you stock up on popcorn, chips, and some bubbly! I suggest you dole out drink duty to your guests and go potluck crazy.

4.) Download the Black Love+ App

Shameless plug time! Black Love just released a brand new app featuring all 4 seasons of Black Love Doc as well as lots of Black Love Original shows that you and your crew will love. Grab your popcorn and enjoy a night of binging!

So by now I’m hoping that you’ve already drafted a text to your squad’s group message. I encourage you to send them one of the photos from this shoot to get them in the spirit! Have an amazing time with your gals this weekend and be sure to tag @blacklove in your own Galentine’s Day photos so we can share the MAGIC!
