The Social Justice Now Film Festival: Must-See Panels and Conversations

Credit: The Social Justice Now Film Festival

When I have attended film festivals in the past, I readily admit that the films themselves were more like icing than cake. Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of the experience is the creative gravity that pulls together so many artists and executives, so many realms of expertise and passion, into a single event celebrating well earned achievements as well as cultivating wellsprings of support for the aspirational. In the midst of a pandemic, it is easy to see how when making decisions of what you can and cannot execute, these vibrant collisions of excellence could easily be among the casualties of the moment.

The Social Justice Now Film Festival, in a remarkably short period of time, was able to provide all of that collaborative magic for a collection of timely conversations led by renowned thought leaders.

ON-DEMAND CONVERSATIONS

These two dialogues are available to stream the entire duration of the festival. Centered on wealth building and an honest appraisal of the race based systems that dominate human life, they are tools of deeper understanding and concrete applications of financial discipline.

When the Roberts court gutted the Voting Rights Act in the summer of 2013 the Chief Justice said “Our country has changed,” on behalf of the conservative majority. “While any racial discrimination in voting is too much, Congress must ensure that the legislation it passes to remedy that problem speaks to current conditions.” Since then, the nine southern states prescribed in the law, and other counties throughout the country, have all engaged in sophisticated and sometimes blatant voter suppression techniques. Coalitions at the forefront of this fight, the Advancement Project National Office, New Georgia Project, New Florida Majority, and Florida Rights Restoration Coalition will discuss the past and present forms of voter suppression, and what we can do to eliminate these wrongs once and for all.
