As a culture, we’ve collectively has started talking more openly about mental health in the past couple of years — and it’s about time. It feels good to see more and more Black folk be open and honest about their mental health and their desire to heal from trauma. The process can be difficult and layered, but it’s a beautiful journey that we shouldn’t shy away from. In the journey to finding a therapist, a struggle that many Black people come across is finding a Black therapist. We want someone on the other side of the couch that looks like us, but studies have shown that, “only 3% of the psychology work-force is Black, yet many people are specifically seeking a black therapist.” That percentage is incredibly low, so it can be difficult to find black therapists in general. While you’re on the journey of searching for your therapist, we want to encourage you with additional resources. Give these amazing Black therapists a follow and know that you are not alone in this journey!
