The blue crew is back and bolder than ever! The new animated musical Smurfs hits theaters on July 18, and Couch Conversations for Two is getting in on the fun. In the latest episode of the Black Love series, Ashley Chea snuggles up on the couch with her daughters, Asiyah and Azarah, to chat about all things Smurfs, sisterhood, and self-discovery. Just like the movie itself, their conversation is magical and filled with adventure.
Smurfette, Sisterhood, and Slumber Parties
In the new Smurfs film, Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) has been mysteriously taken by evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel. Now it’s up to Smurfette, voiced by none other than Rihanna (yes, that Rihanna!), to lead the rescue mission. With some help from new human friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny before it’s too late.
With powerful themes of self-discovery, friendship, and kindness, Smurfs is a whimsical ride. We follow James Corden’s No Name as he figures out who he is, what he’s meant to be called, and how he wants to show up in the world. It’s a reminder to kids (and adults!) that your voice, your name, and your passions are worth finding and celebrating.
Seeing Rihanna and Octavia Spencer, two iconic Black actors, bring these animated characters to life adds even more magic to the experience. It’s another example of how Black films and Black movies continue to bring richness, representation, and heart to screens big and small.
What Would You Do If You Found Smurfs in Your Backpack?
Ashley kicked off the Couch Conversation episode with a big, blue question:
“What would you do if you found a real-life Smurf in your backpack?”
Asiyah, clearly a fashion icon in the making, had it all planned out: “I would take her out, if it was a girl, and I’d make some clothes for her. I’d spend every day with her.”
Azarah, on the other hand, was all about the ultimate girls’ night. “I would dye her hair my color and give us matching stripes,” Ashley’s daughter shared. “Stay up all night and do slumber party things!”
Smurf Names and Rihanna Love
When asked what their Smurf names would be, Azarah didn’t hesitate: “Smurfette No. 2 [would be my name]. Rihanna’s going to be playing Smurfette, and I love Rihanna.”
Honestly? Same.
Ashley also leaned into the heart of the episode by getting a little tender with her girls. Asiyah flipped the script and asked her mom, “What makes our bond magical?”
Ashley’s response was the kind of mom moment that pulls at your heartstrings:
“I have sisters and they’re my best friends, and I love them so much,” Ashley gushed. “I feel like our bond is special because it reminds me of the relationship that I have with my sisters. That makes me feel really special. I love being your mom, and I can’t wait until you guys are older and we can travel together and hang out.”
Whether you’re heading to the theaters or having your own couch convo at home, this episode (and movie!) is a reminder of the magical connection between moms and daughters, friends and family, or Smurfs and humans.
Don’t Miss the Blue-Tastic Adventure
The Smurfs movie is a heartfelt, hilarious, and high-stakes journey the whole family will love. With Rihanna as Smurfette and Octavia voicing the wise and mysterious Wizard Asmodius, it’s a star-studded film you won’t want to miss.
