Egypt Sherrod’s Furniture Line Indigo Road is Rooted in Life’s Journey and the Road Ahead

Egypt Sherrod believes that we all have a journey to follow in life, business, spiritual growth, and design. Her new furniture line, Indigo Road, Home Furnishings by Egypt Sherrod, is a love letter to places she’s traveled as well as the road ahead. The award-winning real estate broker, co-host of the HGTV show “Married To Real Estate” with her husband Mike Jackson, and CEO and Qualifying Broker of Indigo Road Realty, spoke with Black Love during The 2023 Black Love Summit. Sherrod let me in on the meaning behind Indigo Road and how this business venture was a dream that was years in the making.

“At some point in my life, I had a crossroads of deciding, even career-wise, where I wanted to go, and I had to find the courage to take a chance and bet on myself and follow the road less traveled. That’s where Indigo Road came from and why all of my entities are now Indigo Road, including my real estate brokerage and my design firm. We are Indigo Road for real estate renovation, design, and home furnishings. So the furniture line was actually conceptualized about four years ago before we even had a show. It was my vision for one day. And when the opportunity came up, it started with something smaller wallpaper. I partnered with York Wall Coverings; they’re well renowned in the wallpaper business, and they offered me an opportunity to develop something. And I wanted to do a luxury peel-and-stick because many people think that wallpaper can’t be removed. But wallpaper today is not your mama’s wallpaper. I wanted to show that you could have luxury, affordability, and flexibility as far as wall coverings. After I embarked on that journey, doors opened, and we were able to create this furniture line.”

Egypt and Mike are global citizens, and Indigo Road is a reflection of that with designs, textures, and colors that are reticent of their travels to places like Morocco, Rome, and South Africa. While luxury, sustainability, and functionality are at the forefront, Egypt was adamant about affordability as well, wanting to ensure that everyone can have a piece of Indigo Road in their homes. “When I was going around and meeting with companies, it was always about, well, what’s the price point? Can the people who watch me on HGTV and follow me on social media can afford it? I want everybody to be able to have a piece of Indigo Road and not have to spend their whole paycheck to obtain it.”

The love poured into the line filled with over 80 crafted pieces aren’t centered in one aesthetic; they’re a fusion of Sherrod’s creativity, refined taste, and admiration for various cultures.

“As a designer, I don’t design for myself. I design for my clients, and they’re all over the world, so I want to be able to pull from my own line and use it. The more you travel, the older you get, the more people you see. When Mike and I went to Morocco, we found ourselves hiking through the Atlas Mountains. We came across an old Berber village, and there were women literally sitting there by hand, weaving a rug that they had probably taken them a month to do. If we saw it hanging, we would take it for granted. But it was incredibly quality hand-woven and, you know, it’d be hanging somewhere and we complained that it cost 3.99. Meanwhile, it took the whole village to make it and would sustain the whole village. When we went to Rome, we got to see the architecture and just the history, so many layers where in some parts the city, the new city is on top of the old city. Visiting Durban, South Africa, to see Zulu Natal, I was driving along and saw a group of kids walking, and I didn’t know where they were walking to. There was nothing around, just woods. We drove probably five miles, and I saw more kids, and finally I saw a school and I said, those kids all the way back there, we’re walking five miles to the school, and I wanted to go drive back and get them. But they were happy. They were fine, they were grateful. And I wanted to also have the spirit of humility and gratitude in my life as well, which is why it doesn’t feel contentious. The line feels very organic.”
