How One Entrepreneur Turned a PCOS Diagnosis Into a Thriving Business For Women

In 2017, entrepreneur Yasmeen Paterson found herself navigating a new reality—one that involved learning how to manage the symptoms of a condition affecting millions of women. The Atlanta native was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), a condition that causes symptoms like hormonal imbalances, skin sensitivity, and irregular cycles. Yasmeen initially viewed her diagnosis as a heartbreaking challenge, but she soon pivoted to see the opportunity. Driven by her personal struggles and a desire for better, healthier options, Yasmeen embarked on a journey that would ultimately reshape her life and the lives of Black women nationwide. This journey led to the birth of Mystic Glow, a company now recognized not only for its innovative products, but for its commitment to empowering women with healthier, worry-free cycle management.

Yasmeen’s diagnosis sparked a deep dive into health research, where she learned just how many common menstrual products contained chemicals and synthetic materials. She switched to organic tampons, but they didn’t work for her heavy flow, often resulting in uncomfortable accidents that made her anxious about being in public. Yasmeen’s frustration grew as she cycled through different products on the market—menstrual cups, period underwear—finding that while they helped, they didn’t fully address her needs. It became clear that what she was looking for didn’t exist yet, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that other women were facing the same struggle.

Determined to create a complete solution, she began working on a vision that would set Mystic Glow apart: a comprehensive menstrual system built with women’s unique needs in mind. Her concept included three essentials: a high-quality menstrual cup, a sterilizer for ease of cleaning, and period underwear for added protection. This three-part system would provide reliable, all-day security and help women feel in control during their cycles, allowing them to embrace their health and wellness without fear.

“True wellness means nourishing the mind, body, and soul, and with Mystic Glow, I wanted to create products that support women in every aspect of their health,” Yasmeen tells Black Love. “Feminine health should be celebrated, not hidden, and every product and service that lifts this veil gives us the power to live confidently and fearlessly.”

Yet turning her vision into a viable product and brand was not easy. From the beginning, Yasmeen faced the hurdles of sourcing manufacturers, managing design details, and raising capital for production. To secure funding, she drew from her personal investments and gained guidance from family, friends, and trusted advisors, forming a financial strategy that would give Mystic Glow a solid foundation. With each step, she was driven by the belief that her products could improve women’s lives and the knowledge that this was something worth fighting for.

In 2022, Mystic Glow officially launched, bringing her vision to life and offering a fresh, holistic approach to menstrual health. The launch wasn’t just about introducing a new product; it marked the beginning of a movement centered on wellness, self-care, and empowerment. Mystic Glow quickly gained traction, with women resonating with the brand’s commitment to safety, quality, and inclusivity.

“Self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity,” Yasmeen explains. “For me, the journey to wellness is about reclaiming our strength and honoring the power we each hold within. When we put feminine health first, we’re investing in the foundation of a thriving community, because every woman who feels her best empowers those around her.”

As a Black woman entrepreneur, Yasmeen’s journey also represents something larger—a testament to resilience, vision, and the power of representation. Navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship as a Black woman came with its own unique pressures, but her success with Mystic Glow stands as a powerful example of breaking barriers in the wellness industry. She’s not only created a product that addresses a gap in the market but also a platform that uplifts and supports women, celebrating diversity and health-conscious living.

Today, Mystic Glow continues to grow, fueled by a community of women who value products that genuinely support their wellness. Looking back, she reflects on the challenges, the late nights, and the moments of doubt, but it’s all worth it when she hears stories of how Mystic Glow has changed lives. Her entrepreneurial journey has transformed into a mission—to empower women, prioritize health, and redefine what it means to manage one’s cycle confidently and holistically.

Her story is a powerful reminder that meaningful impact can come from personal struggle and the best solutions often come from those who understand the problem firsthand. Yasmeen says that Mystic Glow is more than a brand; it’s a celebration of wellness, resilience, and the power of women’s innovation. For her, it’s just the beginning, and she hopes her journey will inspire other women to dream big, trust their vision, and take control of their health and future.

“The most beautiful glow comes from within, and Mystic Glow is here to help women shine by nurturing that inner health and confidence,” Yasmeen says. “When we prioritize wellness, we’re building a legacy of strength, self-love, and resilience.”
