R&B singer Sammie first gained notoriety at the tender age of 12 when his 1999 single “I Like It” (a song that millennial Black women who lived for the Y2K era will never forget) debuted on the top 25 Billboard Hot 100 list. Sammie is one of the few artists who has successfully transitioned from child music sensation to grown-up artist. He’s recently released his newest EP, “Satin Sheets,” and is currently co-headlining The Vibes on Vibes Tour that kicks off in March. But the Miami native is no stranger to touring. In 2019 he embarked on The Everlasting Tour, performing in intimate settings, giving his fans an up-close and personal experience, and was a fan favorite on 2020 The Millennium Tour. In addition to being an artist, Sammie’s also an entrepreneur who in 2020 launched his candle company, Simply Naked Candle Co. Sammie has had a lot of success in his career, but the one thing he doesn’t have is someone to share it with. As his 35th birthday approaches, he opened up to Black Love about his latest project, his love life, and why he feels ready to start a family and settle down.

Black Love: Tell us about your latest music project.

Sammie: Yeah, I just dropped the EP first. It’s called “Satin Sheets.” It came out on February 11th, just in time for love day.

It’s by far the most sensual, sexually vulgar project in its totality that I’ve ever created, but I’m just in a different space where I want to love and be loved, exude love, make love.

So the reviews have been thus far, so far, so good.

Black Love: So, what was your inspiration for the album? Was the inspiration about love? What made you want to create a love album?

Sammie: I’m big on manifestation and then praying over the things that I manifest. And I think now that I’ve gone at my music career being on autopilot, as in I’m having fun with it, I just got off the Millennium Tour. I’m about to go back on tour with Eric Bellinger, the Vibes on Vibes tour. And I got my hand in some other business ventures as well. The only thing that I’m truly missing is the happy ending to share companionship, union, and partnership with. So I just wanted to create a project to set those making love vibes to.

Black Love: What have you learned about love in your 34 years of life?

Sammie: That love is a never-ending cycle of dying to self to be reborn to your person. You have to take yourself out of it and stretch when your patience is running thin. Take yourself out of it and give more grace and forgiveness when you want to call it quits. Of course, it takes two to tango, but I just really, realize that every day is a choice to be committed. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, it’s an endless cycle of just expanding yourself for that person.

Black Love: What were some mistakes you’ve made in your past relationships, and how do you plan to not repeat them moving forward?

Sammie: Well, in my 20s, I was really living an R&B for real lifestyle where I had a multitude of women.  And of course, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. I mean, unless you’re honest and that’s how you’re operating from the jump, then it’s okay. But if you have sideline chicks, and they’re a secret to your main, then that’s infidelity. So I just created boundaries and then realized, I’m still empty. I can have four or five girls on a roster, but if we’re not equally yoked, I’m still left not satisfied. So I created boundaries now where when I’m in a relationship, my girl is my best friend. She’s my homie. She is who I go grab drinks with and bowl with and pray over and pray with. Like, that’s my partner in all realms of my life.

Black Love: So are you single and mingling?

Sammie: No, I’m not mingling, but I’m newly single.

I’ve been in a grey area with the actual love of my life.  She’s an amazing person, and I’m grateful for the time that we got to relearn each other. But I think there are some things that she may need to work on without trying to love me at the same time. So prayerfully, if it’s in God’s plan to rekindle, I’m open, but I’m not one of those dudes that get out of a relationship and then hop back into another situation.

So right now, I’m just focusing on God, family, and getting to the bag. And I guess healing too because it’s always hard when you’re doing life with somebody, and then all of a sudden, it comes to a complete halt, especially when honestly nothing happened.

Black Love: Why do you feel you are in a better place to settle down now versus 10 years ago or five years ago?

Sammie: Just maturity and then my relationship with God, truthfully.

I’ve always been a godly man, but the older you get and the more experiences you go through, you really start to learn that without him as the center and root of the foundation, you have nothing. I start every day starts with prayer.

I’m in two or three Bible plans. I’m currently reading the whole book of Job this month. So, I talk to him so much that the love that I have for myself and the love that I have for my God helps me to love my person in a more divine way.  Now is the perfect time for me. Financially, I’m in a much better place. For most men, a big part of us trying to procreate is related to our money and career. When those aren’t flourishing the way you want it you’re not thinking about offspring. So I think it’s good for me. My thirties, man, has been the prime of my life. And you hear a lot of people say that, but it’s really true.

You can catch Sammie on The Vibe on Vibes Tour with Eric Bellinger. The 27-city tour starts on March 11th at Atlanta’s Center Stage. The tour will stop in Los Angeles, New York, Houston, and Chicago.
