From the Frontline: Dr. Mollette Offers Tips to Protect Yourself During COVID-19

The last few months have proven to be emotionally taxing, mentally exhausting, and physically draining. From school closings to remote work and social disruption, our world has been changed in unimaginable ways. As we continue to navigate this new normal coupled with the lingering uncertainty we face daily, we must carry forward the necessary safety precautions issued by the CDC, including:

  • Avoiding mass-gatherings
  • Wearing a mask
  • Staying-at-home (if possible)
  • Practicing proper hand-washing

According to the New York Times, there have been more than 5 million confirmed cases in the United States alone and approximately 163,000 deaths since the beginning of the outbreak. Unfortunately, I know several people included in these numbers, so on a personal note, this hits close to home. I have witnessed friends and family members contract COVID-19, and sadly some even succumbed to the virus.

“Please remember there is no easy way out of this pandemic. Nothing is more important than our health — yours, and mine, and everyone in between. We will survive if we can come together as a community and put public health first,” she emphasized in her op-ed piece with the NY Daily News.

One fact that has come to the forefront during this time is the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black communities. Some of the increased risk factors contributing to a higher rate of cases stem from long-standing social and health inequalities. But with doctors working tirelessly to make a difference in the community like Dr. Mollette, she is both encouraging and affirming, “It’s time for us to stand in solidarity to fight this pandemic. No one takes care of us better than we take care of ourselves.”
