If there’s one thing that actor J. Alphonse Nicholson is known for, aside from his stellar performances on screen, it’s his profound love for his family. This love was beautifully captured in Black Love’s Father Noir series, a visual memoir celebrating Black fatherhood.
Created by Black Love founder Tommy Oliver, the series showcases heartfelt images and videos of Black fathers and their children in black and white. J. Alphonse, best known for his captivating role on the hit show “P-Valley,” brings the same authenticity seen on screen to his role as a father.
The actor is the proud dad of a young son named Bryce and stepfather to his wife Nafeesha’s 18-year-old daughter, who has just been accepted to New York University. This blended family dynamic has allowed the “Clipped” star to embrace fatherhood in multifaceted ways, balancing the joys and challenges with grace and love.
Speaking about his son Bryce, J. Alphonse shares, “Seeing him grow [is my favorite thing]. Seeing the elevation, physically, mentally, spiritually. Being the molder of his clay to a certain extent, and then, it’s like all of a sudden he takes it over. Now he’s the master of his own clay. So that’s my favorite part because he’s at that age now where he’s growing every day.”

Alphonse’s metaphor encapsulates the delicate balance of nurturing and guiding a child while recognizing their growing independence. It’s a sentiment that many parents can relate to, including stepparents. J. Alphonse’s love extends seamlessly to his stepdaughter, whom he affectionately calls his own.
“My daughter is my stepdaughter, my baby,” he says, a simple yet loving statement that speaks volumes about his parenting.

His bond with Bryce is equally profound: “I love him, man. This is my baby. This is my boy. Now he’s starting to figure out, ‘All right, how do I be a big boy but still love on my dad?’ You know? That’s an interesting thing.” This balancing act of growing up while maintaining a close relationship with your parents is a challenge, but J. Alphonse’s open-hearted approach clearly resonates with his son.
In Father Noir, J. Alphonse and Bryce also show their love of fishing. The duo are pictured fishing together, one of their favorite activities to do as a father and son. By featuring fathers like J. Alphonse, Father Noir is doing crucial work in reshaping the narrative around Black fatherhood. The series provides a platform for these intimate and loving moments to be shared, countering often negative stereotypes and showcasing the strength and tenderness of Black families.
As fans of J. Alphonse, it’s a joy to see his off-screen role as a loving father celebrated in such a meaningful way. Here’s to many more moments of growth, love, and inspiration in the Nicholson family and beyond. Stay tuned to Black Love’s Instagram and TikTok for more Father Noir content!
