Connecting in 2024 can be quite a daunting task. It’s difficult to try and get to know someone through dating apps and social media, and trying to meet people in real life can feel awkward. The communication can be challenging and genuinely connecting with others can start to feel like a chore. On Black Love’s “Couch Conversations For Two,” you can watch strangers, friends, family, and couples get to know each other in a fun way with the help of card games. The card games featured are some of Black Love’s favorite get-to-know-you games: The Love Deck, Do Tell, and Actually Curious.
After watching the first couple of episodes, you’ll want to try this out in your own dating life or with friends or family to get to know each other better. The very first episode brings in two strangers and they ask questions from, “Do you believe in love at first sight” to “What about your parent’s relationship would you mirror?” Throughout the series, different pairs of strangers, folks who are dating, and even coworkers come together to play these card games, andp it is so fascinating to see people connect in such a genuine way.
In the very first episode, strangers Chellz Evette and Justyn are asked “Do you believe women and men have specific roles in relationships? If yes, what are those?” The two go back and forth and share their perspectives and come to the conclusion that it comes down to your personal preference. Chellz says in the video, in response to the question, “I have expectations of you to change my tires and you probably have expectations of me to cook or something.” Then Justyn interjects and jokingly says, “I mean I be cooking so…we can both cook.” This interaction shows that getting to know new people doesn’t have to be tiring, it can be playful and exciting to hear different perspectives.

The playful banter between the two is adorable to watch as a viewer. The episode shows the beauty of family and the importance of a close father-son relationship in the Black community.
What I enjoyed most about the first couple of episodes was the fact that the card games eased the tension of getting to know someone new, or helped build a closer connection with someone you already know. It somehow lowers the stakes and heightens the level of engagement between two people. I’m excited to see how the upcoming couple of episodes will unfold and the pairs we get to meet next. We’ll see different pairings throughout the series from lovers to exes and friends. “Couch Conversations For Two” is definitely worth the watch, will spark your curiosity, and maybe even inspire you to get to know the people in your life more deeply.
